Some days ago, we were sitting at a tea-lady at Jackson, in front of Haseeb dorms, on Hurriya street. We accidentally witnessed a Kasha (sweep), an event that happens almost everyday in this place.

Whole we sat at the tea-lady, a locality pick-up truck makes its way into the street and starts arresting street vendors who have no shops , but showcase their goods on a piece of cloth on the street. They confiscated their simple goods, mangoes or peanuts to be exact, the goods that make up their entire economic activity.

The locality arrested them and confiscated their goods, but it also showed excessive use of force and they beat them with canes and sticks. They beat the street vendors who were trying to make a living in a country with work opportunities only in the informal sector.

There was one vendor who was resisting, he was selling green mangoes, the kind you eat with chilli and salt. The new favorite meal for students who don’t have a lot of time and little money in their pockets.

He was held and forcibly lifted into the truck with his mangoes, still resisting, three officers were beating him.

When he found that there was no way out, he began throwing mangoes from the truck , bystanders were running to pick them up.

In both cases he lost his economic activity, his main income…….perhaps one of his friends would pick up some mangoes and save it for him , but surely he was adamant that the officers do not enjoy his mangoes.

We talked to the tea-lady , she said you don’t know anything. Two days ago, a pregnant tea lady had a miscarriage during a sweep, when she fell and hit the wall.

After that, we spoke to the other vendors, and we found out the vendor’s name. We told our friend, a lawyer who went to the Northern police station and did not find the vendor’s name on the logbook.

He told us
“he is probably that kind of person, he will get beaten and will stay the night at the police station and will be released”
